This tic season has an earlier start than previous years with ticks that are more likely to feed on pets and people, according NPR’s article With Number Of Ticks On The Rise, This Season Could Be ‘Horrific’. The situation is especially bad in Texas where spring-like temperatures have been felt since February this year. Now is the time to bring your cat or dog into the Colleyville Animal Clinic for pet tic prevention.

Ticks generally live in wooded areas and can latch onto a pet or person that walks by. These pests transmit diseases, including Lyme disease in both humans and pets. Preventing ticks on pets reduces the chances of either you or your pet contracting a tick-borne illness. Colleyville Animal Clinic has effective prescription options for preventing ticks from biting your pet, including popular topical insecticide drops.

Our Colleyville TX veterinarian can prescribe topical medications to apply to the back of your pet’s neck to prevent ticks from biting. The most effective of these medications are available only from your veterinarian by prescription. If you are given one of these prescriptions for your dog, do not use it on cats. The topical medicine used for dogs includes an ingredient that is toxic to cats. You should also keep your cats and dogs separated until the medicine dries after applying it. These topical drops only require a single monthly application for long-lasting protection against ticks. Some drops may also kill and prevent fleas. Ask the veterinarian for the best option for your pet.

We want to be your choice for a vet in Colleyville both during tick season and throughout the entire year. Let our veterinary services help you with all of your pet care needs. When you decide to prepare your pet for the upcoming tick and flea season, call Colleyville Animal Clinic at 817-281-3449.

The Colleyville TX veterinarians at Colleyville Animal Clinic know that spring break is approaching fast. If you plan on boarding your pet while on a short vacation away from home, knowing how to prepare your pet before you drop them off is half the battle. Boarding your pets at Colleyville Animal Clinic is the safest, healthiest, and humane way to leave your pet behind.

Grosse Pointe MI dog trainer Gretchen Schock offers some tips for choosing the right boarding home. Read some dog boarding tips below:

1. How much freedom do the dogs have? Are they in crates all day and taken out for the occasional walk? Is there group playtime? Do the dogs have their own private run that they have access to whenever they want? “If your dog is used to being in a crate all day and walked once or twice a day, then a facility where he is crated all day may be okay,” Schock said. But for many dogs, the freedom of movement is desirable; for some it is necessary for a happy experience.

2. Does the facility have a vet on call 24 hours a day? Though you may want your dog seen only by your vet, it is important that the boarding facility has someone who can care for your dog immediately, particularly if your boarding choice is not near where you live. That said, be sure to provide your vet’s contact information.

3. Make sure your dog’s vaccines are up-to-date. “They have to get them at least three days before they are boarded,” Schock said. “Make sure your dog has the Bordetella vaccine. But also know that even if your dog does receive that vaccine [which protects from kennel cough], it’s like the human flu vaccine. It protects against most of those viruses, but not all. It’s nothing against the kennel if your dog comes home with it.”

4. Allow your dog to stay at the kennel for one night before you leave so that his first experience is not a one- or two-week stay.

5. Bring your dog’s own food for him to eat while he is there. “That leads to less stomach upset,” Schock added. “Also, remember that it is not unusual for a dog to not eat for a day or two when they are not familiar with their surroundings.”

6. If your dog requires daily medication, ask if the facility will give it to him.

7. Of course, ask about all of the pricing plans and what they include.

Your Colleyville TX animal clinic knows that you can’t always control what your pet gets their nose into around the house or in the yard. Your pet finds their way into your backpack or purse to find the gum deep in the carry-all left on the floor. Their nose will find itself just high enough to get the top of the trash in the garbage can and tip it over. With Valentine’s Day approaching, pet poison control tips from Colleyville Animal Clinic should be at the forefront of your concern. After all, there will be a lot of new treats around the house for your pet to be curious about.

The Pennsylvania Veterinary Medical Association (PVMA) recently shared some pet poison safety tips for pet owners this Valentine’s day:

Many people receive chocolate on Valentine’s Day, but chocolate is toxic to pets—dogs and cats. The darker the chocolate, the more toxic, but dark, milk, semi-sweet and baker’s chocolates all can cause adverse reactions. Darker chocolates contain caffeine-like stimulants that cause gastrointestinal, neurologic, and cardiac functions that can cause vomiting/diarrhea, hyperactivity, seizures and elevated heart rate. High fat in lighter chocolates can cause life-threatening inflammation of the pancreas, so make sure to keep the chocolate where pets can’t reach it.

The press release also suggests other possible fatal holiday gifts and Valentine’s Day dangers such as a flower arrangement of lilies. A lily flower is possibly fatal to cats as ingestion symptoms are upset stomach, vomiting, or diarrhea. Also, thorns from roses can be dangerous to all pets as well as any small drink of alcohol lapped up from stemware left on a coffee table or low sitting table.

Always consult your Colleyville veterinarian at Colleyville Animal Clinic in the case of pet poisoning or call 911 for an emergency. To schedule an appointment for your annual pet check-up call 817-281-3449 or visit Colleyville Animal Clinic online.

Your Colleyville TX animal clinic is the perfect place to board your pet over the holidays. Many families leave town for the holiday break and with all the presents, kids, food, and luggage don’t have room for the pets. Boarding your pets is the safest and healthiest way to leave your special furry friends behind.

Kim Boatman who writes The Dog Daily for KLTV in Tyler TX has created a boarding checklist for dogs. Read some dog boarding tips below:

Take these precautions before you board your pup:

Update vaccinations “Make sure all vaccinations are current at least a week to 10 days before boarding your dog,” says Sherry Boyer, owner of the Dog House Inn in Gilroy, Calif. Dogs occasionally show symptoms of canine cough or bordatella from the vaccine, and a boarding facility won’t be able to tell the difference between shot-related symptoms and the real illness, explains Boyer.

Check requirements Call the boarding facility to inquire what its vaccination requirements are. Bring proof of the vaccinations with you when you arrive at the facility. Some places also require a clean fecal report as proof that your dog doesn’t have worms.

Visit your veterinarian Even if a facility doesn’t require a veterinarian’s clearance, it’s a good idea to schedule a checkup for your dog within 30 days of its stay, especially if your dog has chronic ailments or is elderly, says CeCe Campbell, camp ranger at Camp Bow Wow Northglenn in Northglenn, Colo.

Double-check medication supplies Ensure medication supplies are adequate for the stay and bring the prescription in its original container. “It’s extremely important that if for any reason your dog has a reaction, or another dog ingests the medication, the staff knows exactly what the prescription is as well as the dosage amount,” says Campbell.

Keep up with flea prevention Almost every facility will require you to treat your dog with a monthly flea preventive. Schedule a treatment just before your dog checks in to the kennel, recommends Greg Martinez, DVM.

Questions to Ask

Steer clear of boarding facilities that don’t offer direct, fully explained answers to all your questions. Here’s what to know:

Can your dog eat its usual food? Dogs may have touchy digestive systems, says Dr. Martinez. Your dog will likely fare better if it can follow its usual diet, so when possible, carefully label its food before boarding.

What treats are given? A facility might serve your dog its usual food but offer unfamiliar treats. Often, treats contain more gluten and byproducts than commercial foods, and some dogs have trouble digesting the goodies, notes Dr. Martinez.

How will the facility handle health issues? Ask if the kennel has a relationship with a veterinarian or if veterinary technicians are on staff.

Share the Right Information

Your dog is more likely to enjoy a safe, healthy stay if you also keep the boarding facility well informed. Let the kennel know the following:

Special needs If your dog is prone to anxiety, aggression or other issues, let the kennel know well in advance. Booking early can ensure that your dog receives the right boarding space, says Campbell.

Your contact info Share your emergency contact number, along with a local number for someone not traveling with you. Provide contact information for your pet’s veterinarian.

Any allergies Provide a list of your dog’s potential allergens along with its other known health information.

Always consult your Colleyville veterinarian at Colleyville Animal Clinic for pet boarding requirements and advice on how to prepare your pet for time away from you.

Your Colleyville TX vet, Colleyville Animal Clinic, recommends you spay or neuter your pet for many reasons. Chief among all reasons to spay or neuter your pet is population control. The Texas Veterinary Medical Association recommends this procedure in a short spay and neuter video.

Controlling the population of pets by having them spayed or neutered helps the growing overpopulation of pet adoption centers and discourages euthanasia. As the video indicated, surgery can also give female pets an opportunity for a healthier life at an older age when things like tumors can cause health to decrease.

Always consult your Colleyville veterinarian at Colleyville Animal Clinic for pet surgery and advice on having your pet spayed or neutered.

Your Southlake TX vet, Colleyville Animal Clinic, wants your pet to be healthy. The pet food you buy for your favorite friend is important and can sometimes be confusing with so many choices and brands. Some food appears to be healthier than others from packaging and advertising, but is it really? Consumer Reports has some advice for you and the pet food you buy.

Consumer Reports suggest your pet food has been feed tested on animals and the test was approved by the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO). They also recommend the food label says “complete and balanced” which means the food can be the sole source of food for your pet.

Your Southlake TX veterinarian can help you combat obesity in dogs through regular checkups and developing a plan for your pet diet and exercise.

Obesity is excess fat storage on your pet’s frame. Close to half of domestic dogs are approaching obesity or are obese. Common causes are excessive food intake and insufficient exercise. Table scraps, snacks and homemade meals rather than specifically designed pet foods are also regular causes of an overweight pet.

Southlake TX veterinary advice should be sought before you change your dog’s diet and exercise habits even if you have an obese pet. Crash diets and excessive workouts are unsafe for your dog. Slower and consistent weight loss will yield better results as well as lower any risk. Often, feeding your dog smaller meals by dividing your pet’s recommended portion into smaller ones is a good start. A lower-calorie food suggested by your veterinarian could be gradually introduced and you should stop feeding your pet “people food” altogether.

Introducing an exercise routine or regular play time with your pet is also a way to combat obesity. Always begin slowly with any exercise routine such as walks or jogs. Exercise routines are not universal and work differently for one breed over another. Pay attention to the weather when deciding what exercise or games to play because too much heat or cold can have adverse affects. Some great calorie burning activities to try with your pet are: keep away with a toy, walking or jogging, running off leash in a backyard or pet park, swimming, or fun-loving rough-house play.

As always, your local Southlake pet obesity care professionals at Colleyville Animal Clinic are here to help your pet lose weight and promote better health. Call 817-577-3909 or visit your Southlake animal care facility online to schedule a regular checkup or to talk about helping your pet combat obesity.
